Amsterdam is much easier without a suitcase on cobbles, trams and narrow café aisles. If you arrive before check-in, leave after check-out or have a long Schiphol connection, the safest plan is to use an official station or airport facility first and treat private app-based storage as a backup.
Amsterdam Centraal lockers
NS operates luggage lockers at Amsterdam Centraal. The current system is self-service: put your bag in a locker, close it, pay at the screen and keep the printed receipt/QR code. NS says the locker opens only once when you collect your bag, so do not store something you expect to retrieve halfway through the rental.

NS lists small, large and XL locker sizes and says lockers can be rented for a maximum of three days before items may be removed. Current Amsterdam Centraal pricing starts at €11 for a small locker for the first 24 hours; rates vary by size and duration, so confirm the live NS table before relying on a figure for a future trip.
Take a photo of the locker receipt
The printed ticket is your key. NS specifically recommends photographing the QR code because a clear phone photo can often be used if the paper is lost. If a locker will not open, use the station service desk while it is staffed; outside service hours, resolving a problem can take longer.
Schiphol storage before security
Schiphol has a staffed baggage-storage facility on level -1 between Arrivals 1 and 2. It accepts hand baggage, checked-size suitcases and odd-size items for up to 30 days and is open 24/7. Current daily prices are €7 for qualifying hand baggage, €9.50 for hold baggage and €12 for odd-size baggage.
Schiphol lockers after security
Transfer-area lockers are after security near the gates and are intended for smaller items. Schiphol currently lists 40 × 40 × 70 cm lockers, a maximum storage period of seven days and a price of €8.50 per locker. These are useful for airside connections, not for a traveller who has already entered the Netherlands and wants to tour the city with a checked suitcase.
Which option is best?
- Arriving by train and sightseeing in the centre: Amsterdam Centraal is usually the simplest.
- Long layover with bags already collected: Schiphol's arrivals-level storage avoids dragging luggage into town.
- Airside transfer: use the post-security lockers if your bag fits and your itinerary keeps you airside.
- Hotel day: ask your accommodation first; many hotels hold bags for guests before check-in or after check-out.
Private luggage-storage shops
Commercial networks can be useful when Centraal is inconvenient, but check the actual host location, staffed hours, insurance terms and whether the bag is in a locker or a back room. Do not choose solely by the nearest map pin, and keep passports, medication, cash and irreplaceable electronics with you.
Do not leave luggage unattended
Never leave bags in a station corner, hotel lobby without staff acceptance or a bicycle basket while you sightsee. Besides theft risk, unattended luggage in major transport hubs can trigger security responses.
Plan collection time into your departure
A locker is only useful if you can retrieve it without missing the train or flight. For Amsterdam Centraal, allow time to navigate the station and deal with a queue or ticket problem. For Schiphol, collect landside stored baggage before going through security; the airport explicitly warns that returning to landside storage after security is difficult.
