Various city and museum cards bundle admission to multiple attractions plus, in some cases, public transport, for a fixed price. Whether one is worth buying comes down entirely to arithmetic specific to your itinerary — not a blanket yes or no.
How to actually do the math
List every paid attraction you're genuinely planning to visit — not attractions you might visit — and add up their individual admission prices. Compare that total, plus any transport costs a card might bundle in, against the card's price. If your list already includes three or more major paid sights (the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and a canal cruise, say), a card frequently comes out ahead; for a lighter itinerary, it often doesn't.
Cards are priced around heavy, back-to-back sightseeing — if your actual pace is closer to what our itinerary guides describe (one major stop per morning or afternoon, not three in a day), you may not visit enough paid attractions within the card's validity window to break even.
What most cards don't solve
A card doesn't bypass advance-booking requirements at popular sights — the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum, both covered in dedicated guides, still require a timed ticket booked in advance regardless of which payment method you're using. Don't assume a card guarantees entry without separate booking.
When a card is genuinely worth it
- A packed multi-day museum itinerary — several major paid sights across a few days is where cards typically pay off.
- A group that wants to move fast — if you're genuinely trying to see as much as possible in limited time, the bundled convenience has real value beyond the raw math.
When it's genuinely not worth it
- A relaxed, one-or-two-museum trip — covered well by our itinerary guides — where individual tickets are simpler and cheaper.
- A trip weighted toward free activities — walking, parks, and neighborhoods covered throughout this site, where a card's paid-attraction bundling adds little value.
