Amsterdam-Noord is not one attraction but a large district across the IJ from the historic centre. For visitors, the easiest first decision is simple: take the short F3 ferry to Buiksloterweg for EYE and the A’DAM area, or take F4 directly to NDSM for the former shipyard and creative waterfront.
The ferries are genuinely free
GVB’s current 2026 information confirms that IJ ferry routes F1 to F7 are free for pedestrians, cyclists and permitted slow traffic. You do not need to tap a bank card or buy a transport ticket for the crossing. Behind Amsterdam Centraal, follow the signs to the ferry docks and check the live destination board before boarding.
Buiksloterweg or NDSM?
Buiksloterweg is the easiest choice if you want a short add-on to a central sightseeing day. The F3 route runs between Centraal and Buiksloterweg day and night. From there you can reach the EYE Filmmuseum waterfront and A’DAM Tower area on foot. NDSM suits travellers who want more time outside the old centre: industrial-scale spaces, studios, street art and waterfront venues reward a slower wander.
Do not confuse the ferry routes
The old advice to “just take the ferry to Noord” is too vague. Several boats leave from nearby docks and they do not all go to the same place. Check the route number and destination. For NDSM from Centraal, look for F4; for Buiksloterweg, F3. Timetables can change seasonally, so use GVB’s journey planner on the day rather than relying on a screenshot from months earlier.
GVB ran a summer timetable for IJ ferries from 4 July through 16 August 2026 and explicitly advised passengers to check trips before departure. The same habit is sensible year-round.
A practical half-day
Cross to NDSM in the late morning, spend time walking the wharf and waterfront, stop for lunch or coffee, then return toward Centraal. If you still have energy, take the short F3 crossing later for the EYE/A’DAM side. Trying to combine every corner of Noord in two hours usually creates more ferry-watching than exploring.
Who should prioritise Noord?
It is especially worthwhile on a three-day-or-longer visit, for repeat visitors, architecture and photography fans, or anyone who wants a break from dense canal-ring sightseeing. On a one-day first visit, the historic centre and one major timed museum are usually higher priorities.
Cycling and accessibility
Bikes use the ferries too, so stand clear of the boarding flow and do not stop immediately at the ramp. The ferry itself is step-free, but the wider district mixes modern waterfront areas with older industrial surfaces. Check individual venue accessibility if that will determine your route.
Coming back at night
The F3 Centraal–Buiksloterweg service is listed by GVB as a day-and-night connection. Other routes have their own operating patterns, so verify your return route if you are staying late at NDSM rather than assuming every ferry runs all night.
