Amsterdam has a genuinely strong plant-based food scene by major-city standards — a real density of dedicated vegan and vegetarian restaurants, plus widespread accommodation at conventional restaurants, which isn't universal across European capitals. This guide covers where that reputation actually holds up, and where more effort is still required.
Where the plant-based scene is strongest
De Pijp and the Jordaan, both covered in dedicated guides, have some of the highest concentrations of dedicated vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the city — a reflection of both neighborhoods' generally younger, more food-forward populations. De Baarsjes, covered in our neighborhood guide, has also seen a real growth in plant-based options alongside its broader food scene.
Foodhallen in Oud-West, covered in our neighborhood guide, has multiple vendors with genuinely good vegan options under one roof — a reliable choice for a group where dietary needs vary.
Navigating traditional Dutch food
Classic Dutch dishes lean heavily on meat and dairy, so a genuinely traditional restaurant may require more navigation than a modern one — but stroopwafels, most bread, and many market items covered in our Albert Cuyp and Bloemenmarkt guides are naturally vegetarian, and increasingly vegan versions of Dutch classics have become easier to find as demand has grown.
Markets and grocery options
Albert Cuyp Market, covered in our De Pijp guide, and most Albert Heijn supermarket locations, mentioned in our laundry and errands guide, carry a genuinely wide range of plant-based products — useful for self-catering during a longer stay.
Communicating dietary needs
English is widely spoken in restaurants, and most staff are genuinely used to accommodating dietary requests — being specific about vegan versus vegetarian (dairy and eggs are common default inclusions in "vegetarian" dishes here, same as much of Europe) helps avoid confusion more than assuming the distinction is automatically understood.
What to expect outside the city center
The plant-based scene is strongest in the neighborhoods covered above; smaller day-trip towns covered elsewhere on this site will generally have fewer dedicated options, though basic vegetarian accommodation is still widely available even in more traditional settings.
