The Netherlands Open Air Museum, just outside Arnhem, relocated over a hundred authentic historic buildings from across the country into one large, walkable park — similar in concept to the Zuiderzee Museum near Enkhuizen, covered in our dedicated guide, but focused on the Netherlands broadly rather than one specific fishing culture, and considerably larger in scale.

The Open Air Museum

Farmhouses, windmills, workshops and homes from different regions and eras are arranged across a genuinely large parkland site, many with costumed staff demonstrating traditional crafts — a hands-on way to understand Dutch regional history that static museum exhibits can't fully replicate.

Local tip

The site is large enough that comfortable walking shoes and a full day matter more here than at most other day trips on this list — trying to rush it defeats the purpose of a museum built around slow, immersive exploration.

Arnhem's WWII history

Arnhem was the site of the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, part of Operation Market Garden and famously depicted in the film "A Bridge Too Far" — the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein, a short distance from the city center, covers this history in genuine depth for visitors with time beyond the Open Air Museum.

Combining both in one day

The Open Air Museum alone comfortably fills most of a day; adding the Airborne Museum requires an early start and efficient pacing, but is achievable for visitors specifically interested in both open-air living history and WWII history in the same trip.

Realistic timing

Given the museum's scale, this is one of the more substantial day trips on this site — plan a full day rather than attempting to combine it with other stops.

Getting there

Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal take around 75 minutes, followed by a short bus or tram to the Open Air Museum itself.
