1940Historic center destroyed
Full dayTo do it justice

Rotterdam's historic center was almost entirely destroyed in the 1940 bombing of the city, and rather than rebuild in a historic style, the city rebuilt boldly modern — making it the single most architecturally striking counterpoint to Amsterdam's 17th-century canal ring anywhere covered on this site. If Amsterdam is about walking through history, Rotterdam is about walking through a genuinely different, forward-looking version of the Netherlands.

The Markthal

A massive arched market hall with a covered food market at street level and apartments built into the arch above, its interior ceiling covered in a huge, genuinely striking fruit-and-vegetable mural. It's become one of the most photographed buildings in the country, and the market itself is a legitimately good lunch stop, not just a photo opportunity.

Local tip

The Markthal gets genuinely crowded around midday on weekends — an earlier or later visit gets you both a better view of the mural and easier access to the food stalls.

The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen)

A cluster of tilted cube-shaped houses, an experimental 1980s housing design that remains genuinely functional — one is open as a small show-house museum, letting visitors see how a livable interior actually fits inside such an unusual shape.

Rotterdam Centraal & the skyline

The station itself is a striking piece of modern architecture, and the surrounding skyline of contemporary towers is unlike anywhere else in the Netherlands covered on this site — worth a walk specifically to take in the contrast with Amsterdam's low, historic skyline.

Witte de Withstraat & the harbor

A genuinely lively arts and restaurant street, plus the historic harbor area with the SS Rotterdam and Euromast tower for panoramic views — both worth adding if your day allows more than the core Markthal-and-Cube-Houses route.

Realistic timing

Given the density of genuinely distinct sights, a full day rewards Rotterdam more than a rushed half-day — this is one of the more substantial day trips on this list despite the short 40-minute train ride.

Getting there

Direct high-speed trains from Amsterdam Centraal take around 40 minutes with no transfer, running frequently throughout the day.
