Two days is enough to do the center properly and still get a real sense of at least one neighborhood beyond it, without the rushed feeling a single day can have. This itinerary builds on our one-day version rather than repeating it — day one follows a similar shape, day two goes further.
Day one: the classic center
Follow our one-day itinerary in full: canal cruise, one major museum (Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum), lunch in the Nine Streets or Jordaan, the Anne Frank House if you booked ahead, and dinner in De Pijp or the Jordaan. This day covers the essentials most visitors come for.
Day two, morning: the second major museum
Whichever of the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum you didn't see on day one — both are genuinely worth their own dedicated morning rather than squeezing in as an afternoon add-on. If you did both already, substitute the Stedelijk or Moco Museum, both on the same Museumplein and covered in dedicated guides.
Day two, midday: a full neighborhood
Pick one neighborhood and actually spend real time in it, rather than passing through. De Pijp for the Albert Cuyp Market and food scene, or the Jordaan for a slower canal-side wander if you only touched it briefly on day one — both covered in dedicated guides. This is the difference a second day genuinely buys you: depth over checklist coverage.
Resist adding a day trip to a two-day itinerary — the travel time genuinely eats into what's already a tight schedule. Save day trips for a three-day-or-longer visit, covered in our three-day itinerary.
Day two, afternoon: Vondelpark or the Nine Streets, unhurried
A genuinely open afternoon works better here than another fixed stop — Vondelpark for a slow walk, or a return to the Nine Streets or canal ring for photography at better light than day one's schedule allowed.
Day two, evening: something you haven't done yet
An evening canal cruise if you did the classic version on day one (the light and atmosphere are genuinely different), or dinner and a wander through Rembrandtplein or the Jordaan's brown cafés — both covered in dedicated guides.
What two days still doesn't cover
