The Rijksmuseum is the museum to choose if you want the broadest single introduction to Dutch art and history. Its collection spans roughly eight centuries, but the building is large enough that “see everything” is a poor plan for most travellers. A better visit starts with a timed entry, a shortlist of must-sees and enough flexibility to wander into quieter galleries.
2026 tickets and timed entry
The Rijksmuseum's official visitor information currently lists adult admission at €25 and free admission for ages 18 and under. A start time is required for almost everyone, including Museumkaart holders. The museum recommends booking online in advance; limited tickets may be available at the entrance while stocks last.
Current pass rules include free admission for several recognised cards and memberships, while CJP/EYCA receive a reduced rate. Do not assume a pass removes the timed-entry requirement: check the conditions attached to your specific card when reserving.
Opening hours
The museum is open every day of the year from 09:00 to 17:00, including public holidays. The shop and café stay open until 18:00, and the gardens are seasonally open. Once you enter at your booked start time, you may remain until closing.
How much time do you need?
One hour is enough for a disciplined highlights route; two to three hours is a much better first visit; half a day suits travellers who enjoy art, decorative arts and history rather than only famous paintings. The museum itself promotes a one-hour highlights option, which is useful if Amsterdam is a short stopover, but the building rewards a slower pace.
The essential first-visit highlights
Start with the Gallery of Honour, where the concentration of Dutch Golden Age painting makes orientation easy. Rembrandt's The Night Watch is the obvious headline, but do not treat it as the only destination. Vermeer's The Milkmaid, works by Frans Hals and Jan Steen, and the museum's broader Rembrandt holdings give the famous canvas context.
Then choose one or two areas outside the main crowd stream. The doll's houses, ship models and armoury are excellent for visitors who think they are “not art people”. The Cuypers Library is one of the building's great interior spaces. The Asian Pavilion and later-period galleries can be much quieter than the Gallery of Honour.
A practical two-hour route
- Enter at your timed slot and orient yourself with the free Rijksmuseum app.
- Go first to the Gallery of Honour and Night Watch room.
- Continue through 17th-century Dutch art rather than zig-zagging between floors.
- Choose one thematic detour: maritime objects, doll's houses, Special Collections or Asian Pavilion.
- Finish with the Cuypers Library and, in good weather, the gardens.
This sequence is not sacred. If the Night Watch room is packed, reverse the logic: explore quieter collections first and return later.
When is it quieter?
The Rijksmuseum's own FAQ says it is usually less crowded before 11:00 and after about 15:30, with Tuesday and Wednesday relatively quiet. That does not guarantee an empty Gallery of Honour, especially during school holidays and peak travel periods, but it is more useful than generic “go early” advice.
The building is part of the visit
Pierre Cuypers designed the current museum building, which opened in 1885, combining Gothic and Renaissance references in a deliberately monumental national museum. Look up as well as at the paintings: stained glass, murals, vaulted spaces and the central passage make the architecture part of the collection experience.
Use the free app
The official Rijksmuseum app offers free tours and route guidance, including approximately 90-minute tours in multiple languages. Bring headphones. It is particularly helpful because the collection is too large for a simple room-by-room march, and it lets you build a route around what genuinely interests you.
Families and younger visitors
Admission is free for visitors 18 and under, making the Rijksmuseum unusually good value for families. Avoid forcing children through every painting room. The ship models, armoury, doll's houses and app-based stories create natural breaks from painting-heavy galleries. Pick three “must-see” objects together and let the rest be discovery.
Accessibility and practical comfort
The museum is wheelchair accessible and is a modern visitor operation inside a historic building. If you need a companion because you cannot navigate independently, check the current companion-ticket rules when booking. Large museums are tiring even when step-free, so use seating, café breaks and lifts rather than treating the floor plan as a challenge to complete.
Food, café and gardens
The Café is useful for a mid-visit reset and remains open later than the galleries. RIJKS restaurant operates separate meal services and is a destination in its own right, so reserve if it matters to your day. In summer, the museum gardens offer a calm outdoor pause around Museumplein.
Getting there and combining Museumplein
The Rijksmuseum is at Museumstraat 1 on Museumplein, beside the Van Gogh Museum and close to the Stedelijk Museum and Concertgebouw. That concentration tempts travellers to book two major museums back-to-back. It can work, but leave a real break between them; three hours of focused looking followed immediately by another timed museum often produces diminishing returns.
Photography and museum etiquette
Follow current signage for photography, temporary exhibitions and equipment. Keep bags and coats manageable, avoid blocking narrow viewing points for long periods and step away from the centre line after taking a quick photo. At The Night Watch and Vermeer works, the best view often comes from waiting a minute for the front row to rotate rather than pushing forward.
Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum?
Choose the Rijksmuseum for breadth: Rembrandt, Vermeer, decorative arts, maritime history and centuries of Dutch visual culture. Choose the Van Gogh Museum for a concentrated story of one artist, his development and his circle. Serious art lovers should do both on separate half-days if possible.
Common mistakes
- Arriving without reserving a start time because you have a Museumkaart.
- Trying to see every room instead of choosing priorities.
- Spending the entire visit in the Gallery of Honour.
- Booking another major timed museum immediately afterward.
- Forgetting headphones for the free app tours.
